Permaculture, or permanent agriculture is a philosophy of agriculture that is working with, rather than against nature. By mimicing the patterns and relationships in nature we can apply them to all aspects of human habitation, from agriculture to ecological building, appropriate technology and even economics. This concept include catching and storing energy, the use of renewable resources, waste reduction and using simple methods.
With this in mind, I wanted to raise awareness in how we, with innovative architecture, can produce durable food and energy, in a way that includes a wide range of users. How we can go from dependent consumers to responsible producers in terms of cultivation and prepare for a future with less available energy.

The pattern of water supplies like pipes and small streams, as well as ditches and drainage was a guide to find the optimal site. The system of the building can be integrated to support irrigation in the surrounding area. The open farming land is a perfect location for placing the turbines, since area is very large, flat and open. It is often exposed to wind, rarely less that the 2 meters per second that is the minimun speed required for a wind tulip to spin.
The shape of the building is inspired by the tulip turbine. There are two separate facades, where the exterior is constructed as two turbine blades, surrounding a vertical greenhouse and supporting it with water and electricity with the use of wind power. The otherwise often hidden parts of a building, like pipes, circulation, machinery etc, is here part of the aesthetics.
There is a steel axis stretching through the whole building. The outer shell of it is fixed to the ground foundation and supports the load of the entire greenhouse structure as it is attached to the floor slabs. The inner axis is rotating, supporting the turbine blades attached at the top, and also leading the collected water down to an underground storage tank.

The greenhouse is a playful environment for a wide range of users. It is located on a farming land right outside central Umeå, and is accessed by both the local farmers as well as many nearby preschools and elementary schools as a part of the education program where they can grow crops all year and learn about sustainable methods.
