2017
Second Academic Year, semester 4
In collaboration with Vide Edenor

Træna municipality is a group of small islands far out the coast of Norway, in the Atlantic Ocean. In the fourth semester we spent time mapping the island of Husøya, a small community that feeds off fishing and tourism.
The village center is fragmented and many public buildings are in poor condition. When arriving to the island by ferry or boat,
you are met by the back of the local grocery store and a garbage station. We saw the potential in creating a welcoming port, by expanding and interconnecting the center with new buildings focusing on local fish, tourism, and a new entertainment venue for the locals. We also saw a need to redirect the car road and prioritize the pedestrians in the village core.

The old fishing houses, many of them resting on poles in the water, is an important inspiration for the development of our design in order to preserve the heritage and cultural value of the community. The aim for the new buildings was to have an industrial influence, cladded with steel sheets and corrugated plastic.
Our construction resembles the existing, as we extend one of the buildings over the bay to create a sense of floating on water. We worked with contrasts of enclosed and open, using a grid system construction in combination with a more rigid core. This can be seen clearly in the center picture below, which is a new cinema/lecture hall building.
